Cliffs of Dover Impact on Other Simulations
#1

Well, okay

After some patches, we see improvement but many problems still remain with COD.

How long before it is a good sim?

I feel that the ball was dropped, so to speak, and opening is left for other sims.

Who is going to benefit from this in other simulations?

I would say something like 6 mouths before 90 - 95 % of the problems are fixed but it could be a year before we have a nice stable sim. Didn't it take a year for RoF to be stable?

Don't get what you mean by left for other sims

Well if people know its got some problems then it will hurt sales and maybe boost some sales for competitive product, but saying that what other WW2 aircraft combat sims are out there at the moment, can only think of IL-2 Sturmovik : 1946 and Wing of Prey which are both made by C1, which C1:Maddox is a branch of that company. So the only other air combat sims I can think of that are out at the moment that could benfet from this is Rise of Flight and LockOn series, but saying that Rise of Flight is a WW1 sim and WW1 sims are even more of a niche market then WW2 sims!!!

Any way luthier posted any update on whats going on at the C1 forums;

Hi everyone,

As I see, there are plenty of wild rumors circulating on these forums, and of course it's completely our fault. I myself simply cannot spend enough time posting on these forums, as I work 10-12 hour days 7 days a week and barely have time to sit down. I feel the weight of my failure to interact with the community daily, but all I have time for is browsing the forums, not actually posting.

We are however in the process of creating a full-time community manager position and setting up an old team member who will interact with you guys daily, answer questions, and keep you up to date on all events.

Otherwise, the work on the patch continues. The true full-screen mode has been a nightmare from hell. It still does not work properly. Every once in a while, after you hit Esc to go to the menu from inside the game, the game will go into the background and require you to alt-tab to you. And while it may seem like a pretty minor thing to most of you, after everything you've already lived through, it's still bad practice and annoying and we always feel like we're 'this' close to solving it.

The current build we have did address the multiplayer issues, thanks in no small part to the help of the dedicated server hosts. Obviously MP is a larger priority than the full-screen mode. If by the end of the day Tuesday we still haven't solved the full screen issue, we will most likely release the patch anyway just so you guys can have stable reliable MP experience, and add the full-screen fix at a later time.

We are also hard at work on some larger game components. We are also hiring, with quite a few new openings posted recently for our Moscow office. We already have a new team member, an experienced AI programmer, reworking our plane AI code and voice comms, and we are working to expand and improve our team during the coming weeks to make sure we can roll out better more well-rounded updates quicker. We are also hard at work on FM changes and improvements, redesigning GUI to make it more user-friendly, and creating new variants of existing aircraft.

Those team members not hard at work on improving CoD have also been working on new content for a new project for quite some time. We've posted a teaser in our V-E day post. Just to state again, work on that project is specifically designed not to interfere with our CoD support.

Most importantly, please don't take the frequency of my visits as an indication of anything right now. As a matter of fact, if you see me here posting a lot, that's the best clue that we are NOT working as hard as we should. All of us at 1C:Maddox Games, 1C Softclub, and Ubisoft, are fully committed to the game and to the series, and like we always said, we will continue to support it with patches, add-ons and sequels in the coming months and years.

Two weeks of blood sweat & tears & knowledge I must upgrade to 64bit & more memory...but when it works & within the limits of what it contains( not enough...) this sim is mezmorizing...clearly the future.Il-2 wasn't perfect at first ( but more perfect than this...) & I clearly remember having to upgrade my PC at least twice...but boy it really rocks ....ditto Rise of Flight- it took at least a year to get that really off the ground ..but it is nice now ( still prefer Il-2 for game play...)CloD needs a BIG patch & hopefully Oleg will get it together before N/American release because right now I'd hat to buy what's here as a noobie...but once you struggle to get it going it really is something...and the future my-oh-my!

Hi, madcat

That's a thoughtful response.

It's good to compare. RoF took a bunch of months. Cliffs of Dover is much more complex, but 1C has a bigger staff and more resources.

What I mean is... 1C could have captured many loyal fans right from the start with a fairly clean CoD release. I would say that the grip on the market with CoD is not as tight as it could have been. Other simulator developers must be breathing a sigh of relief. They can go into expansion (or launch, if it is a new sim) and expect not as heavy a loss for the hearts and minds of flight sim enthusiasts. They might be able to do much better in the market than they would otherwise.

FS, Rof, and some other flight sims exist in such a relatively small market for flight simulations. I think that there are lessons for all sim developers in this almost debacle of CoD release, besides the issue of sales.

Luthier published that today. Thanks for posting that.

It looks like an even bigger shaking in the 1C office than we thought, huh? Big Grin

It takes time to train people. I wonder: How this will effect quality of the releases in the future?

Hi, Dietz

Has is already become something that other sims strive to attain or is that coming eventually, say in a few years?
