Well I think a lack of animation is not a deal-breaker here. What's more important is that a group of troops can be made to move from point A to point B. I had not even dreamed that animation was needed. The objects that represent soldiers are very bland and boring anyhow...but they do hold rifles.
Perhaps a few different type of troops:
marching with rifles- the "obect" that has a soldier with rifle on shoulder, standing. 12 soldiers in double file
skirmishing- the objects that show soldiers with rifles aimed, standing and crouching. 12 soldiers spread out, fighting
large groups (say 25-30), which are a combo of both above- soldiers near the center are standing with rifles slun over shoulders, on leading edge of group, with rifles aimed
When the "troops" object is destroyed, a small crater could be left behind
So now, a troop suppression mission actually has a target, and battles can consist of more than tanks and trucks milling about
I'm not seeing a problem with no animation
