The M2 loading is APIT-AP-HE-AP I believe. Assuming the APIT has some "power" (what causes the fire, HE and incendiary in game have a power, there is no special incendiary code), the tracer should cause fire. Josse said that the HE had very low power. Lower than other MG ammo I think (even 30 cal).
I think that a vetted version of his weapons mod would be nice to see some day, particularly if we have an app to control who gets to play on a server with a given mod. A more realistic belting, like API, API, API, API, APIT does indeed make the .50s more effective vs japanese planes in terms of starting fires, though it has little effect on german planes with their protected fuel tanks.
Ideally, I'd like to see...
Assuming we can add planes to il-2, and assuming we can add weapons:
Add a couple new M2 guns. One is early war and has APIT-AP-AP-AP-AP belting. One has APIT-AP-API-AP-API belting. The last is APIT-API-API-API-API. Planes would have their M2 versions changed based on when they were operational. Early planes like P-36, P-40B, F2A, F4F-3 would have the all AP belting. Others might have the mid belting with AP and API. Planes that crossed time periods where the typical load changed might have the multi version different from the country, one with each type. Note that I think we should add a new US country, too.
