Same thing was happening to me. I got an 8800GTS card and on max settings the game looks absolutely stunning - no stutter, nothing - but after a while the display drivers would start crashing. The first few time i could recover by alt-tabbing out of the game and then back again, but soon it would freeze up completely and i would be forced to reboot.

I had to take down the details a bit and disable hardware shaders. That's what solved it finally, now the game runs without a problem - but it doesn't look as good as it used to. You can't have everything, i guess... :roll:
