Good question...From where I see it the author of this post, x4btr, is the most likely candidate.

This view is derived from purchasing and reading this book, "Soviet Air Force Fighter Colours, 1941-45" by Erik Pilawskii of which x4btr is also the author Wink

He has gone to extreme lengths to research the subject and is seen by many, including me, as the premier expert on the subject. I found the book so well written and informative, that despite it size and weight, I chose it to take with me on a trip to the other side of the world.

That's not to say our friend OLORIN is wrong, but OLORIN has not yet produced any proof of his supposition, other than the massively subjective

Incidentally, if you take the time to read the included "readme"'s, Canon's VVS colour schemes were based on Erik (x4btr)'s research.
