... some tga's are unreadable by standard graph. editors ....

you need to set that tga as game loading screen ( gui\background0.tga) take screencap while game is loading (print screen) and past it as new tga in graph. editor ....resize to original dimension.... edit as you like and save as tga with original values ( 8bit if grayscale or 24bit ... 32bit if alpha channel present)
