WWII fighters and the Realair Spits do a great job of exhaust flame at night..
And just a point, the masking of exhausts for single engined british fighters at night, was mainly for the pilots benefit, as Hurricane and Spit pilots would be virtualy blinded due to the position of the exhaust stacks in front.. A masking plate was used to shield the glare for subsequent nightfighter aircraft..
There are also many accounts of nightfighters being vectored close enough to enemy aircraft until they are close enough to get a visual.. usualy by all accounts when they pick up the exhaust signature..
