Well we can do new slots, which is probably all we could learn from how they added them to the game.
It all lies in the model format. Unfortunately, the *.msh file suffix is common to an unbelievable number of different formats, just like *.mdl.
And then there's always the .msh is a binary of another format. An ancient but still modded strategy game, Battlezone 2, does that. The game uses .msh for model files, but they are derived from .xsi files.
Actually that's a route to look at, as the original IL2 and BZ2 were released around the same time back in 2000/2001.
Shall I send someone with more IL2 expertise a few of the BZ msh files to see if calling that format works in IL2?
