That's it. In the game, all objects are infinitely stiff, but also very fragile. When two infinitely stiff but very fragile things touch, something has got to break. To simulate anything else, a very dynamic physics model would have to be implemented, which simulates stresses and is actually able to determine the strength of a structure. And that is definitely out of reach of the IL-2 engine, and much more out of reach of current processing power.
Oleg once wrote that bending wings and dynamical breaking points and all the other fancy things known from real life would actually be possible to simulate, but it would take a very long time to create the proper models, physics engine and current computer processing power is much too low to do such complex calculations in real time, i.e. 200 ms or so.
