I think Charlie is referring to the Prop blade design (i.e. the 3d representation) rather than the prop operation.... i.e. Constant Speed v Variable pitch.

All operational Hurricanes and Spitfires were Constant speed in BOB by August 1940 with both De havilland on Spitfires and Hurricanes and ROTOL on Hurricanes almost exclusively.
