No, it's to do with scaling of the texture.
If there's no number, the texture is displayed at the default resolution. If it's a '2' the texture is displayed at twice the size (and therefore half the resolution). A '-2' halves the size and doubles the resolution.
I don't have Perfect mode to test this, but apparently auto-generated trees won't appear on textures displayed as '2' and above.
