Bo,
It sounds like you're thinking of the QMB+ mod (Beta Downloads???) At least that's what I recall the mod was that allowed change of default skins. Essentially, you choose the skin you want as default for that plane in QMB, tab-alt or whatever it is that allows you to go to your windows screen, go into Paint Schemes/Cache, find the a/c folder, copy the tga's there, then go to your Mods/Skinmods folder, find the a/c file, and drop the tga's in there.
Funny thing though...it has always worked like a charm for me on all aircraft except for the P51's. The first time I changed the default for the P51, I followed the standard procedure, but when I was back in QMB, the default skin showed that OD/NM skin--for all models of the P51. (I too have chosen a yellow checkertail for a default.) Anyhoo, after repeated attempts to figure out the problem, I just chose the checkertail for my own plane, and figured too bad the rest of my squadron isn't going to match. But when I played the mission, lo and behold, all the AI planes showed up in my chosen default checkertail! But still, whenever I check out the default skin in QMB, it still shows the OD/NM skin! So I can't figure out where the QMB is pulling it's skin from...but it pulls my intended default from the proper place when in-mission.
P.S. I put the checkertail skin in all of the files of all the P51 variants, so the only thing I can think of is that the QMB is pulling it from some mod version of the P51...only I don't have any mod like that. I had a similar problem with the B25's, but that was because I had the B25 strafer mod (which came with a default skin), which was loading before "regular" B25's and therefore using the mod's default skin despite my attempts to change it on other B25's. To avoid that type of problem, I have the skin mod loading second, right after the soundmod. It fixed the B25 problem, but not the P51.
