@crazydog - Usually I can hear the explosion of my bombs if I am at low altitude.
I would actually prefer to hear less of external explosions, enemy gunfire, nearby aircraft etc overall.
In game, you can actually hear MORE external sounds than most WWII aircrew could in real life.
When you are sitting close to the unmuffled exhaust stacks of engines in the 25+ litre range, you can't hear much else...
Pilots in many aircraft could not hear their own plane's guns over the engine/s (gunners in bombers could hear their guns as they were very close to their guns, and not so close to the engines).
Pilot reports and recollections often note that the first realisation that their plane was being fired on was seeing the tracers or hearing rounds strike the actual cockpit!
Other aircraft engines could not be heard at all if their own engines were running.
About the only 'outside' sounds noted as audible by actual pilots was nearby heavy-calibre AAA detonations (as requested by Brennus) and damage to their own planes.
Additionally, one report I read mentioned the noise of a nearby heavy bomber's bomb load going off in the bomb-bay, but this was so phenomenally powerful (and close) that the shockwave actually 'flipped over' the identical heavy bomber in which the witness was a crew member.
 And what about I shut down the engine?
I can hear the explosion of my bombs if I am at low altitude too,but I think the sound is not like the real one...It should more clare and some "deeper" ,sorry for my english,I don't know how to describe it,just like a thunder...
