I have been flying IL2 since the demo (lol) and i've had experience with modded games before with excellent results, Silent Hunter 3 with the Grey Wolves Expansion pack, which is essentially a unified mod installer like what you're doing now here.
Being a total newcomer here (ok i was lurking a bit before as well) i was thinking "damn, so much work and yet there's not an easy way to do it, nor keep everyone on the same page for online play". And then, BANG, here comes this!
I bet all you guys know how important this is more than i do, because it will simply enable a set of non-cheating mods to be used widely in online play. In fact, 1c would be wise to support such a self-policing action from the community, since it's their game you're essentially giving new breath into. Most of all, people will have the same tools at their disposal to fight online, so it will be kept fair. (Imagine flying in a squad where half the 190s have the default bar and the other half have the bar fix, askania sights and 6DOF tracking, you get my drift.)
I expect mod friendly server numbers to sky-rocket soon.
However, one last request from the rookie if you please. We need a version switcher tool with a GUI that will work with 4.08m and later on with 4.09m. A lot of people spend time on non-mod servers and it would help us stick to the rules without the need for double installs and constant fiddling with the game's directory structure. I can't wait for the unified installer but i'd still want to be able to fly in servers like Warclouds, which is not open to mods but it's still an excellent server with very good pilots.
I think i stumbled upon such a little program here recently and didn't bookmark it, thinking i would find it later on but the forum is a bit chaotic at this time, especially for someone like me who doesn't know the ropes yet. If anyone has a link to the forum post containing the aforementioned program i would be grateful.
Judging from videos on Youtube i can't wait to fire up a modded install of IL2. Thanks for all your hard work
