Its also more realistic than pitch darkness ironically enough. Sure, if you're underneath a cloud and there's no lighting, things get pretty black. I have flown at night and it got very spooky taking off and landing knowing there was high ground either side of you. Moonlight however is a life-saver. Human eyes can adjust to very limited light sources and its suprising how well you see (at least in general terms) on moonlit nights, especially since if you're above cloud the chances of this sort of visibility are much increased. Actually, I do agree, a 'darkness' option would be realistic, but since the AI can see you in the dark without any trouble whatsoever, surely you want the same advantage?
