FRAPS records with almost 0 compression, so the resulting files, as you've probably noticed, are very large.
I do get the framerate hit, same as you Cnopi, but not that bad. When first starting the capture, there is a big lag, an for a bit afterwards. Mostly I notice it when panning the view during the capture, there is a lot of jitters.
But as pointed out, the beauty of IL-2 is that you can make a track file, then selectively record from that. Normally, you don't need to capture with FRAPS at the full resolution you would use when flying, because your final video product is usually going to be a much lower resolution anyhow, so I run the game in a window, at a lower resolution to make the capures. That helps keep the frame rates up for the video caps, and may even allow you to bump up some of the graphic settings.
Years ago, when I first started doing this, I would record a track running the game at 1600x1200, then replay the track and make the captures at 800x600. Now I have a big 1920x1080 HD monitor, and I'm making 720p HD captures, replaying the track file at 1280x720. This is plenty for a video.
