Looks like in order to strike US from Germany they'd have to fly over Great Britain twice.

Well, the fuel available was enough to "go around" UK twice.

Maybe, if they took off in the south of France or Norway and derouted Britsh islands a few hundred kilometres south or north. However I'm sure British would launch a lot of long range (twin engined) interceptors at predicted bomber return time and cover the area north and south of British islands.

Great Britain was in effect like an enemy AAA gun at the end of your runway.
