For me it's more the city than the airfield as I can fly over the city and as soon as it's behind me the FPS go back up, despite the airfield still being within my view. The really weird part is that if I approach Malta from the other side (from the south) I don't get the same impact on FPS! I don't get that at all... It still gets reduced but not as much.
