It could also be the servers settings on the distance where you can see the icons, your resolution, whether or not you use direct x or open gl.

I've had this problem before.. but I can't quite remember how it was fixed. But I can understand the frustration.. especially when diving on them when you do see them.. just to lose them against the ground details when the icons disappear.
