I vote for the D520 as well.
Also I believe that for a modder/modeler that the IAR80 is the closest thing to D520 in performance and flight model. (2nd being LaGG-3)
I've seen some work on other aircraft where people are moving parts (meshes) of certain planes to make other different aircraft with surprisingly fine results.
Though of course I have no knowledge on how to do things myself (I'm learning slowly), A viable D.520 project I think might stem from the engine section from a LaGG3 mounted on IAR80, and then reshape to fit D520 profile.
There are already 4 machine guns of the proper caliber in the proper location, and I supose one could transplant the centerline cannon from an MS406 to get the 20mm Hispano.
Anyway, I don't think that a very close to historically accurate D.520 is too far off...

P.S. If anybody has any insight as to how I could begin doing the above, just PM me. I know were not supposed to talk about it outloud, but I would like to offer my help to any body that's interested in this project. I have the tools (from this site) and 3dsmax 5, I just haven't been exposed to the MOD scene long enough to really be able to use them efficiently. With some simple instruction, I anticipate being able to learn to model simple things that will allow a project to be completed and enjoyed sooner.
