i was struggling a bit as we began the "reef" phase of our texutre process on the NGNB. i finnaly figured it out.
What this picture shows:
-this is me testing the process after i opened our Map_C and drew a box on the water and filled it with RGB 148.
-then i used a brush of various sizes painting on that RGB 148 with color RGB 0. the word "reef" was done with RGB 0.
-then i opened the Map_T and drew a box in the same location on the map and filled it with RGB 45 (45 is the Map_T coastline texture #) on the Map_T. this allowed me to see it in the game.
the white lines you see are just the wave animation frozen in time.
I was tripping over the fact that you had to alter the map_C AND the map_T in order to see the reefs.
the Map_C controls the water depth.
