I started to think about some kind of a layer like you are already doing.
I guess with the reef method the only thing that you'd have to be very careful of is to remember that it is kind of like a reverse fill over the layer tracing. Correct me if I am wrong.
I am interested to know what satalite images you are using and what kind of layer you are using?
I'll check the online island map for the water colours to see if they are suitable.
I'm sure I'll have to extract the load in from the sfs extractor tool.

My map project from Fabian Fred covers North Queensland Townsville to the tip of Australia. PNG Port Moresby and Lae.
I was more interested in Moresby and the Kokoda Track.
My map does not have Team Pacifics New Britain (Rabaul) area at all.
