I don't think I would've been able to bring it back if it was hit again...
I got hit at about 600m altitude, so I had som room to play with. The initial burst caused massive control difficulties due to slow airspeed and I nearly stalled. So I firewalled it, put out takeoff flaps, and once back in control of the aircraft, I gave it a little nose up trim and contiued the fight.
The other day, online, I landed a P-51C that had severed aileron cables. I had bounced a 109, and got two square bursts on him. But since .50 mights as well be BB's, he just threw a 20mm my way whilst I was extending away. That single round cuaght me, and so I guess ALL of the aileron contol cables just couldn't handle the impact...
Events like these give me much more confidence in my ability to fly than my ability to aim.
