Just my 2 cents:
1) Play with OpenGL in perfect mode (HardwareShaders=1 in conf.ini's openGL settings)
2) Max out all graphics settings in conf.ini, such as Water=4 for Nvidia, effects=1, Forest=3, Landgeom=3, etc.
3) Play on recent and/or modded maps with new textures, tree lines, etc.
4) Use Avala's plane shine mod
5) Use nice skins with MAT manager for decent markings
6) Use reskinned objects and/or new skins for existing objects such as buildings, tanks, ships, trains, vehicles, airfield plates, etc, all available here.
7) Use the native resolution of your monitor (set also full screen in conf.ini if necessary)
After that, shake all the ingredients, make a nice cocktail. Make sure it plays on your PC; if not, buy a new one or upgrade...
Use QTim's mod for taking as many screenshots as you want in .jpg format, launch missions and set the game to autopilot, remove speedbar and icons, remove HUD messages (option in conf.ini) to have a clean screen, and... watch the show, take many pictures like a skilled photographer would do (take care of light reflections, viewing distance and angles).
ENJOY THE SHOW!
Even though this game is old, it does provide excellent picture quality if your graphics settings are adequate, without any trick regarding screenshots. Mods help, but even without mods you can get nice pictures. I must say that Avala's plane shine mod and map mods with new textures help a lot though, and if you add new airfield plates and objects' skins you reach a new level.
