p-51 On a carrier
#4

I'd love to fly anything with a hook on it! But....the Navy would never have accepted this plane for carrier operations. The inline engine is just too delicate for that environment. The Seafire was not a great success, not only because of it's narrow gear, but also because of it's engine. Think of every famous (successful) carrier based plane in history - with recip. engines - and you will see that they all share the same thing in common, the round motor. The Zeke, Kate, Val, F4F, F6F, TBF, F4U, SBD, SB2C, F8F, AD, Swordfish and last but by no means least, the Hawker Sea Fury. The others, such as the Seafire, Fulmer ?, Fairy Blackburn and Judy had moderste success, but just didn't quite perform as well as their round motored brothers.

But like I said, if its got a hook on it, I'd love to fly it. Personally, I think that the P-47 would have made a kick-ass carrier fighter!! Albeit, with a little better flap/slats system for improved slow flight characteristics.
