Artillery
#24

The largest coastal guns in Norway where placed at Trondenes fort outside of Harstad named the Adolf canons.
these guns have a caliber of 40.6 cm and a range of 56000 m.
These gigantic canons was originally to be used on battleships but the new H and J class ships where never built.
Therefor the canons got placed on coastal forts in Norway. Poland and at the English chanel.
The canons/ artillery used at the coastal forts by the germans where taken from all over the concered europa and it must have been a logistick nightmare for the germans to get ammunition and spareparts for the guns as they widley differed in size and make.
Alot of the guns where guns taken from scattled ships or from ships never built or finnished. like the graf spier.
anyhow it seems like the range usually was between 15000 and 22000 meters for the coastal guns.
This i guess must have been more than enough as even if the battleships could shoot passed the horizon this had no use as they didnt have any means of seing where theire shells hit( no satelites, UAV in thoose days)
If they sendt ships closer to monitor where the sheels fell down the observing ships would have been in sight and therefor in range of the coastal guns.
