By far the best method to sink a sub ( surfaced ) is by rockets, in real life and in the sim, deniing the AA gunners a close in attack. This is the main reason that the Coastal Command put rockets even in a B-24( GR Mk IV and subsequents marks ) and the venerable Fairey Swordfish ( the only Biplane to fire Air-to-surface missiles ).
During the early 3 years of war Coastal Command + USSAF / USN rely exclusively in non-propeled weapons. A realy tough job, going over 2 or 3 QF 20 mm and 1 or 2 QF 37mm automatic cannons, dependin on the Mark of a sub.
Aero torpedos was seldom used, but work very well. In MTO 1941 3 Swordfishes attack Suba Bay and sunk 2 submarines + a Destroyer + a Sub-Tender with 3 torpedos, with one of the submarines been hit while on the move in the Port entrance. ( the Sub-tender and the other submarine were sunk with just one torpedo, what have passed under the sub and detonated betwen the ships )
Cheers.
