Naval guns have basically been unchanged since WWII other than FC (Fire Control). 5" guns and below used casings as they aren't that heavy, appx 50-70 lbs /rnd. Large caliber guns 12" and above used/use a shell and powder bags loaded via a trolley/ramming tray like that found in Battleships.
(I was Navy for 6yrs before joining the Army. Should've stayed in the Navy.... DOH!).
Anyway.... The guns used on Naval Destroyers in WWII are the same guns that were still used on the Whidbey Island Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LSD's) until the early 90's until they were retired.
