The II model had a "box" under the cowling (in the chin of the plane). The first production model had no "box" (sorry for my English). The first blueprint you used said "Ki-44 II" also....
The "box" I was talking about is the oil scoop

The version I was produced in 40 unit and in 3 series , only the prototype have the oil cooler in the cowling , the production type have the oil cooler under the cowling; the version Ia have cowling gun of 7,7mm and the wing gun of 12,7mm; the Ib have all the 4 gun of 12,7mm calibre , the Ic have the gear doors and leg reworked.
The version IIa have more powerful engine and early a/c retain cowling 7,7mm MG and telescopic gunsight , from version IIb the guns switced to 4 x 12,7mm gun and in version IIc the wing gun was the 20mm , the 37mm and even the 40mm (which have a short aerodinamic cover between barrel and wing)
