Control the pilot in the ground
#9

A simpler way would be to do it like the old European Air War sim, a randomizer. In that sim, you never knew what would happen when you bailed out over enemy lines. If you survived the bailout, you might get a message that you had been captured or you might get a message that you had been picked up by the underground and were returned to friendly lines x days later. In the campaign you would actually miss the missions for the days you were down. The closer to the friendly lines you were when you bailed out, the better the odds that you would be returned to your unit.

In Il2, you can be 1 meter inside enemy lines and you are automatically captured. I remember flying a particular mission with my old online squadron that really showed the inadequacy of the Il2 engine. I was badly shot up by a bunch of Zekes and I bailed out over a U.S. carrier and its escorts. The message popped up that I had been captured. What? I bailed out over my own ships and I still get captured? What a buzz kill. Sad
