Making a mission in the FMB for the first time can indeed be daunting and seem difficult, mainly because the users manual is rather short and doesn't give much explanation for novices. I too fluttered around in the QMB for too long, having given up on understanding the FMB.
But then I found an excellent website that provides animated and spoken tutorials for using the FMB.

It's broken down into small parts so that learning a certain aspect of mission building in FMB becomes as simple as pie. Once you've gone through several tutorials you'll become a whizz at making missions. I'd advise to download the tutorials or to go through them once or twice and then to practice in the game itself.
You'll be amazed at how easy mission making actually is in the FMB.
