tomthetom here some tips:
The skin file must be of .bmp type and must be put in the PaintSchemes->Skins->CorsairMkII folder.
I suppose you are playing existing missions or campaigns.
If so you must before flying the mission, configure your aiprlane and select the skin you have added which will appear in the scroll menu.
After you have selected the skin you then fly the mission and the new skin will stay.
If you use the FMB then you must select the skins when you set the plane objects in the missions you are building. For the IA controlled airplanes the skin once selected will be used. But for the airplane you will fly that is not enough. You must still before flying configure the skin of your airplane.
