once I showed to an SCW veteran an I-16 flying over a Slovakia map

Here are a few (ground) photos of battlefields in Spain. They give at least a bit of an idea of how terrain looks.
On the Slovakia map, I'd say it probably most resembles (apart from the villages) the Teruel front, where there was serious and bloody fighting in the winter months. Teruel is surrounded by mountains in the high 2000 meters and hence very cold and snowed in. Maybe that would be a good approximation for the Slovakia map. It's also very wooded around Teruel.
For the Ebro itself here is a photo of the destroyed and preserved village of Roden and somewhat to the south another photo of Belchite, another destroyed and preserved village/town. You'll notice the predominately reddish colored earth and houses.
A last 2 photos is of the Monegros or Aragon front, north of Zaragoza, south of Huesca. This is where George Orwell served for several weeks as a Spanish Republican volunteer until being wounded in February 1937. You can read his account in the beginning of 'Hommage to Catalonia' wher he describes the village of Alcubierre.
These photos are of the landscape around the now restored 'Orwell Trenches' in the Monegros - a predominately dark greenish landscape, while just some dozens of kms to the south, the landscape becomes barren and reddish-grey colored.
As you can see, landscapes in Spain vary considerably from extreme to extreme. Hence the beauty and allure of the country.
