In the single engine fighters, all these larger caliber cannons (40mm+) were mounted in pods under the wings right? I don't see how they would fit otherwise, seeing how the engine was in the nose. These were also retrofitted (weren't planned on the original aircraft)? The Mossies and other twin engine planes wouldn't have that problem though, so they could modify loadouts as they saw fit.

Remember experimental Yak-9P with 57mm automatic cannon, mounted on engine, and "in-production" Yak-9UT with 45mm autocannon.
