I remember that I once installed a paratroop mod that showed (German) paratroopers sitting in the fuselage of the Ju-52. It was a nice idea but it caused my game to crash as well, even without using a Ju-52 in a mission I believe.
So I deleted that mod - which is just moving/deleting the paratroop mod directory - and all was well with the world again.
I can't remember the name of that mod, but I'll bet 2 to 1 it has the word 'paratrooper' or a variant in it.
By the way - to avoid anxiety attacks and thoughts of despair, it is always a very good and prudent idea to keep a clean, unmodded copy of your game in a very safe place. Keep two copies even, if you have the room on your hd.
That way, when something goes wrong, and it always does sooner or later with our modding mania, you can easily and quickly start anew with your clean copy. Sure you'll have to reinstall some mods again, but that is not much work compared to uninstalling and reinstalling, updating and patching the game again while trying not to forget to backup your skins and missions first. It's like having a comfort blanket or a pre-prepared backup position to fall back on.
