Besides being too large to load, most of western Europe at any rate, is so flat and devoid of interesting terrain features, that it would necessitate an enormous amount of objects and cities and towns and roads to make it interesting to use as anything other than a df map ...

I tried doing a map of Belgium just to see what it looked like and it was so flat that there was no feel to flying in a 3D world ...

But all that aside, you are right that map makers don't seem to take to Europe in general ...
