Co-op games are games where players choose their exact place in a squadron. When starting a coop the players tick themselves into an open slot in the window that has plane types and numbers listed in. AI pilots fill the empty slots. Then the mission is carried out similarly to normal campaign or single missions.
When you join HL you see the boxes in the middle of the window. They are for different single missions, for example coops. If someone starts shouting out he has a coop coming up just join one of the boxes (obviously the one where the shouther is) and the game will start when the leader wants to make it start. Thenchoose your position and plane and wait 'till everyone else is ready to go.
Coops are fun, I recommend trying one. Teamspeak server is usually provided but not always. When possible, join TS.
