Regarding your point about the transparency of the canopy, I agree... the canopies of combat aircraft (especially fighters) were cleaned meticulously, almost religiously after every single sortie or in times where the aircraft had been left to stand. To see was to live and even the slightest bit of muck or the smallest scratch could end in disaster.
