That's happened in the QMB for me. However I was dumping ordinance to take on an AI a/c. I was about 100 meters off the water. I thought it was the splash which is about the size of a water explosion. I'm guessing that the torp goes off when it hits the water from that height. Kinda flimsy construction if water spray at 100 meters can demolish the plane

About the torpedo exploding on contact with the sea, it'd be the blast from that, not the plume of water, that knocked out the aircraft (given that in IL2 you appear to be able to fly into water splashes and not be harmed.)
