I was discussing this same subject with a friend the other day. It derived from a conversation involving ms-flight simulator and moved to il2 - long missions.
at some point I asked, if one is playing cockpit-off, gauges on screen with tas and radio alt, icons to tell id and distance and those useful arrows that point the enemy before you see it (that's the way we played), what is the point of flying 30min to the target?
When we observed that in our squad, we opted for missions that would be short as it was clear the group enjoyed more the fight, the bullets and the blood than the simulation aspect of il2-1946.
Since now, I only play online - as players are unpredictable when compared to AI - and I prefer that, the only use I make of time compression is when watching the .trks
...and what's is the point of my reply after all? Simply to suggest shorter maps or to get an air start 5min from the target . When this idea floated on our group, the initial reaction was of rejection, we were sacrificing realism... there was so many good maps... and obviously pilots didn't start 5min from target. debating we realized that although missions did not start 5 min from the base we wanted less waiting time before action... realism?? Though thing to defend when one is using icons and flight paths or not seeing the cockpit. It was settled.
After getting as much of fast action as we could some of us moved to full switch and, now, prefer to play online.
Well that's what worked for us. I hope it contributes with someone else.
