No, it's definitely better to use OpenGL (especially on nVidia). Post your settings and we'll see what's what. Also post your graphics card settings - in particular your AA, AF, VSync, and Triple Buffering settings.
BTW 2X AA will not use much VRAM at all
it's the higher settings you need to avoid (for VRAM management).
