another area where you are able to gain fps is the filesize of the clouds4x4.tga, I use a 256Kb version which still looks good (original size which is included in the cloudmods is 4Mb iirc)

I tried lower resolutions but there's a big drop in image quality.

This mod doesn't change image quality (at least, not that I can see on side-by-side zoomed-in screenshots) so it's a "free" FPS boost for anyone using texture compression. But yes, lowering the resolution of the cloud textures does increase the FPS even more.
