Thanks for all the feedback guys I was really optimistic as there was a lot of good ideas there but I still can't get rid of this glitch I've tried everything suggested and it still wont go away! :x I'm down to just changing options in CCC and ingame one at time to see if it has any effect, I'll post if I find out what's causing it.
Cheers

***EDIT***
Typical I make this post, faff about with some settings and the bloody glitch dissappears with me none the wiser! I can only guess it was one of two things I did or both of them combined, I don't know. First, I went back into CCC ->3D-> standard tab and set the slider all the way to optimal quality. Then after this I had a brainwave to double check that il-2 was running in windows xp compatibility mode as I'm running it on vista. It was, however I had not checked the 'disable visual themes' box or the 'run this program as adminstrator' box which I've noticed helps to do when running other older games on vista. So I checked these box's, fired up the game and hey presto! I don't have IL-2 black void simulator!, I have a pretty landscape to admire!
