Mixture Controls in US Planes - Mod Request
#1

I've been reading the original F6F flight manual and have been completely blown away by the engine management features provided by Oleg. While many of the less important items are not modelled e.g. battery switch, the majority of the major items have and seem to work pretty much according to the manual. Even the mag drop was correct! Hats off to the Oleg and his team.

I was surprised to find that while the mixture controls of several aircraft are modelled well, the US fighters seem to have only 2 settings modelled - auto rich and full rich. According to the manual, full rich should be rendered inoperative and no attempt should be made to use it. The auto lean and idle/cutoff settings cannot be accessed for some reason which is a shame as the pre-takeoff and takeoff procedures could otherwise be followed pretty accurately.

I was wondering if a mod would be possible to allow a lean setting in US fighters as supported in other planes. I believe it was possible in the real aircraft to manually adjust mixture too but the manual warns against this and states the auto rich and auto lean settings should provide accurate enough metering - manual leaning is not recommended unless the carb is badly adjusted.

I have no knowledge of the IL2 game engine but am a programmer and my guess is that there may be a file somewhere to link the mixture lever object in a particular model to a common mixture management routine? Perhaps auto lean cannot be modelled due to a reliance on bespoke classes but just a moving lever would be a start!

I guess I'm in the minority here but being able to fly a sim aircraft according to the WWII manual has added immensely to the immersion for me.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I'd also like to extend my thanks to all those who have contributed to the patches to date - it really is like a new sim now. Big Grin

Cheers,

Dave
