What's taking the most time is the painstaking and mind numbingly boring task of destroying the city of Stalingrad object by object in FMB - If anyone knows of a better way to do this, please let me know! I've even tried nukes!

There is a "destroy" function that works very well in FMB. The user manual describes it in detail.

yes, that's correct. Please don't waste your time destroying one object at a time.
In FMB select destroy objects (I think) and then use "F" key with mouse (if i remember right) and run the mouse pointer over all areas needing to be destroyed. You can also use different percentages of destruction using the slider.
