P-51 Mustang The Heritage Flight Museums P-51, "Val Halla" is a D model P-51 painted in the colors of the 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron based in Reykjavik, Iceland. Bill Anders flew there as a young Lieutenant during the Cold War, with several interceptions of the Soviet Unions "Bear" bomber in his F-89, Scorpion fighter jet. The name "Val-Halla" is drawn primarily from three major factors in Bill's life. First, is his wife Valerie, second, is the fact that as ambassador to Norway, Bill grew to favor the richness of that country's Viking heritage (Val-Halla being Viking heaven), and third, the paint scheme is based on his Icelandic flying squadron's colors, and Iceland is Viking country also. The chief pilot, founder, and President of the Heritage Flight Museum, Maj. General William Anders USAF (Ret), is one of the very few pilots that have been approved by both the USAF and USN to fly in air show formation passes with military Demonstration Team aircraft. With over 8000 hrs of flying time, he flies the Heritage Flight Museum's P-51D Mustang "Val-Halla" with F-16, F-15, and A-10 fighter aircraft in the USAF Heritage Flight Aerial Demonstration program.
