I use the WIN key to get to the DT, then Alt+Tab back into the game. To prevent the freeze: click on the shortcut icon and DON`T move the cursor (the mouse) before you see the game splash screen, do it this way the next 10 to 15 times you start the game and it seems like windows "learns" how you want it to behave, at least it has worked this way for me.
