you are right, that's because the crosswind. I think this is made by the windconfig MOD, every new mission file is added such section at the end:
[Mods]
[Weather]
WindVelocity 7
WindDirection 90
WindTop 9500
WindTurbulance 2
WindGust 3
after delete it, the phenomenon is gone
the strange thing is the MOD don't affect the AI planes
