IL-2 1946 installation: 4.06 loaded from DVD under Wine 1.1.26 then 4.07 and 4.08 upgrade. AAA_Community_Installer_ver_1_0_part01old.exe and 7 part RAR installed with slight hiccup at part 3 where the target needed redirection. After trials found that game worked best under Wine 1.1.17 (now 1.1.31).

Blender http://www.blender.org/ can be used to model aircraft just as well as 3DMax. Blender = free but 3DMax = 2700 GBP; I've used both in the past but I am now happy to just use Blender (and stay completely legal). You probably know that it takes much time to use these applications properly; I've been using Blender for over two years and still know less than half of it.
I wonder if you intend using it for IL-2? If so, I think people use GMax for modelling - and I think its free. I see you can use Blender for MS FS9 flyable aircraft: Blender > *.OBJ file > makemdl.exe > *MDL.
