Hey, no self respecting Eighth Air Force crew chief would have let his Mustang look like that! Really, though, it's nicely done, but I have a beautiful color shot of BBD taken during the war and the airplane was spotless. Those Ninth Air Force birds, after the invasion, tended to be a little rugged looking. The ground crews had no time to worry about keeping them clean. Especially out in those muddy fields on the Continent.
The Eighth ground crews,though, even had time to take all the paint off of some of the older planes and polish them up all nice and silver, like. That OD tended to get really nasty looking after no time all. The Ninth crews were too tired after preparing their fighters three or four times a day for missions to worry about paint!
Anyway, I'd love to see someone do the Mustangs in that type of photo real schemes that the F-86 Sabres are finished, in. Would that be possible?
